Last Light is inspired by the compact sandstone found along the North Shore of Oahu, where Kaimana Banes grew up. Over time, the tide wears down the stone, softening its sharp edges.

In this piece, Banes contrasts an angular form with soft light. Two folded stoneware slabs meet at a sharp peak, with a pitted surface that mirrors the texture of the shoreline. Lit from within, a warm orange glow escapes through the seam between them, casting a thin sliver of light onto the wall. The light softens the structure the way water softens stone, and its color recalls the last light of a sunset.
