Kaimana Banes (b. 2001, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi) is an artist and ceramic designer whose practice spans ceramics, photography, and art direction. Best known for his enigmatic lighting and organic tableware, Banes draws on the surf culture of Oʻahu's North Shore and the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, setting rigid, architectural lines against soft, organic form, his work lets form speak louder than surface. Positioning himself within a lineage of place-based making, quiet material restraint, and the Hawaiian value of mālama (to care for), Banes treats clay as a record of presence rather than ornament. His forms move between sculptural light objects, weathered vessels, and tableware that feels like something the tide left behind.
