Serendipity in New Zealand

Serendipity in New Zealand

Only through pure serendipity did our entire trip feel complete in one day. Unbeknownst to us, our satisfaction for perfect surf lay in the hands of a passing stranger. Surrendering into the unknown, we found what I could only describe as something you see in a magazine.

We planned to check out some of the local surf spots on the South Island of New Zealand but sometimes the best plans are no plans at all. As Mike, Rosie, and I were about to leave the last spot of lack luster surf, we decided to ask a local who just so happened to pass our car on her morning walk. She said she knew nothing about surfing but she did however see some waves over by the beach where she lived. We took a chance and checked it out.

Pulling up to the overcast beach, the only other soul was a man sitting in a chariot being pulled by a running horse. In the distance, was a large mountain seemingly adorned with white rocks, but with a closer look became grazing sheep on the mountainside. With the overcast weather and chilling temperatures putting on our wetsuits seemed more of an arduous task and these waves didn't seem promising with the low tide.

After moments of contemplation, waiting for the rising tide, we decided to get out there. Almost instantly after paddling out in the frigid waters, the sun came out and beautiful sand bottom peelers started rolling in. It was as if the universe was saying "you found the spot." After our first couple of waves, Rosie and I rushed with excitement, while Mike had his hands full shooting, his camera shared between the two of us. As Rosie caught a wave, I was already on the next one behind it—she catching the rights and I the lefts.

It was thrilling and we ended up staying the whole day.

Thank you, stranger. As our best day of surf is all thanks to you.
